Senior tailback Napoleon McCallum rushed 37 times for 138 yards and a pair of touchdowns Saturday at Charlottesville, Va., as Navy upset 20th-ranked Virginia, 17-13.

McCallum, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury last year against the Cavaliers, scored on runs of three and one yards as the Midshipmen won their first game of the season after three straight losses.

Virginia fell to 2-1.

Navy Coach Gary Tranquill said he was not surprised at McCallum’s performance. “He’s been like that for three years,” he said. “He seems to get stronger as the game goes along.”

It was the 14th time in McCallum’s career that he gained more than 100 yards. That eclipses the all-time Navy record of 13 set by All-American Joe Bellino (1958-60).

Navy finished with 262 of its 403 total yards on the ground.

Virginia ran for 196 yards and passed for 108 more, but quarterback Don Majkowski was intercepted twice and the Cavaliers also lost a fumble as they were driving with 9:23 left in the game.

Majkowski completed 11 of 21 attempts, while Navy quarterback Bill Byrne finished the day with 10 completions in 21 attempts for 143 yards.

Georgia Tech 14, Clemson 3--After injuring his shoulder earlier in the game, quarterback John Dewberry came back to catch a two-yard pass from running back Jerry Mays with 4:56 gone in the third quarter to complete the scoring in Georgia Tech’s Atlantic Coast Conference victory at Clemson, S.C.

The victory improved the Yellow Jackets to 2-1. Clemson dropped to 1-2.

Dewberry set up the score with a 32-yard pass play that bounced off two Clemson defenders and was caught by Georgia Tech tight end Tim Manion. On a third and goal at the Clemson two, Dewberry pitched the ball to Mays, who ran right, stopped and threw into the end zone to Dewberry.

Dewberry was injured in the opening drive of the second quarter but returned at the beginning of the third quarter. He finished completing 7 of 10 attempts for 94 yards.

Virginia Tech 24, Syracuse 14--At Blacksburg, Va., quarterback Todd Greenwood ran one yard for the go-ahead touchdown after his team got a second chance to score on a penalty.

On a fourth-and-two with Tech trailing, 14-10, early in the last quarter, Tech opted to go for a field goal. But offsides was called against Syracuse on Tom Taricani’s kick, giving Tech the down over and the ball on the one-yard line.

On the next play, Greenwood broke a tackle and slipped into the end zone.

After a Jamel Agemy interception, Greenwood hit Greg Brooks on a five-yard touchdown pass to clinch the win. Greenwood also hit Allan Thomas on a six-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and wound up completing 15 of 26 passes for 175 yards.

The win gave the Hokies a 1-3 record. The nonconference loss dropped Syracuse to 1-2.

North Carolina 51, VMI 7--William Humes rushed for 104 yards in 21 carries and scored 2 touchdowns at Chapel Hill, N.C., as the Tar Heels (2-1) rolled up 577 yards in total offense against the Keydets (0-3).

North Carolina quarterback Kevin Anthony completed 17 of 31 passes for 268 yards. He threw a 75-yard bomb in the second quarter to wide receiver Eric Streater for one touchdown and ran one yard for another.

VMI, which has lost 22 of its last 25 games, scored its only touchdown when Al Comer hit split end Mark Stock on a 67-yard pass play in the second quarter.
