The Region : Fruit Fly Discovery Prompts Quarantine
Fifty-one Oriental fruit flies have been found so far in northeast Long Beach, Los Angeles County agricultural officials said, prompting a federal-state quarantine to prevent the moving of any fruits or vegetables out of a 90-square-mile area. Bill Edwards, deputy county agricultural commissioner, said three more flies have been discovered in Glendale, where a similar quarantine probably will be declared within the next 10 days. In both areas, the crop-threatening pest is being fought with insecticide-laced sex-attracter bait and traps.
