Revitalized CS Long Beach Seeks 3rd Straight Win in Game at Boise
Cal State Long Beach will try for its third straight football victory tonight when the 49ers play Division I-AA team Boise State.
Quarterback Doug Gaynor, who led the 49ers (2-2) to a 28-24 victory at Nevada Las Vegas last week, has completed 116 of 171 passes for 1,119 yards and 8 touchdowns.
But an improved defense and newly acquired poise have also been responsible for the revitalization of the 49ers, who started the season with two defeats.
Linebacker Dave Carter had 20 tackles, and free safety Roger Beavers had 17 against Las Vegas, which scored only three points in the second half.
The 49ers also avoided personal fouls agains Las Vegas.
Boise State is 2-2 after defeating Montana State last week, 58-21. Jon Francis rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns in that victory.
Long Beach will be without starting freshman tailback Michael Roberts, who has an injured kneecap. Replacing him will be another freshman, Brian Browning of Inglewood, who has caught 15 passes.
