A Paradise Hills house sustained $100,000 in damage in an early morning fire Monday, said Logan Bellows, San Diego Fire Department spokesman. There were no injuries.

At 3:55 a.m. Monday, firefighters from the San Diego, National City and Bonita fire departments were called to the blaze in the 5500 block of Shaw Street, and found the house fully engulfed in flames, Bellows said. The occupants, William Gregory, Helen Richey and two children, were awakened by the odor of smoke. They attempted to flee from the burning home through a front exit but were blocked by flames, Bellows said. The four then broke a window at the rear of the house and escaped to the backyard, he added.

“This fire could have been a fatal fire if the family had not awakened early,” he said.

The Metro Arson Strike Team is investigating the fire.
