No Excuse Will Be Good at This Church Sunday

In a bit of whimsy, Rancho Capistrano Church will hold its first annual “No Excuse Day” this Sunday at 9:30 and 11 a.m. services at the church, 29251 Camino Capistrano, San Juan Capistrano.

Excuses for not attending will not be accepted by the church, which has prepared for the myriad difficulties the less-than-devout say keep them from attending church on Sunday mornings.

For example, those who claim that Sunday is the only morning they can sleep in will be given folding cots for the service. Steel helmets will be offered to those who boast: “If I came to church, the roof would cave in.” TV dinners will be available for parents who “can’t go to church and cook dinner at the same time,” and one section of the church will have trees and grass for those who prefer to worship in nature.

The sanctuary of the church will be decorated with Christmas poinsettias and Easter lilies for those who rarely attend and who have never seen it any other way.

According to church secretary Ginny Vanderhall, the Rev. Robert Schuller got the idea from a friend in the congregation early last summer, and it quickly became popular with other church members. “It’s a fun way to invite friends to church,” she said.

Schuller’s topic will be “Solid Ground for Solid Living,” and the church choir will perform. A refreshment period is planned between services. For more information, call (714) 643-2700.
