Friday’s Prep Highlights : Robinson Leads San Pedro to Win Over Washington

San Pedro’s Lionel Robinson rushed for 245 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown in 31 carries as the Pirates, The Times’ No. 10-ranked team, defeated Washington, 46-34, in a nonleague game at Washington. San Pedro is 3-1, Washington is 2-2.

Both teams got excellent performances from their quarterbacks. San Pedro’s Randy Galosic completed 9 of 13 passes for 137 yards, and Washington’s Marc White hit on 15 of 30 for 304 yards. Each quarterback had four touchdown passes.

James Dockery and J.R. Guin each had two touchdown receptions for San Pedro.

The Generals led, 20-18, late in the first half, but San Pedro scored to take a 25-20 halftime lead it never relinquished.

San Pedro entered the fourth quarter with a 32-27 lead, then Dockery caught a touchdown pass and Robinson ran for a four-yard score to put the game out of reach.

City Carson 20, San Fernando 9--The Tigers scored first on a three-yard run by Brent Huff, but Carson struck back on the next play from scrimmage when junior Calvin Holmes ran 63 yards for a touchdown. The Colts added a second touchdown at the end of the first quarter when quarterback Marc Walters connected with Holmes on 36-yard pass play down the right sideline. Two plays later, Alvin Goree scored on a short run to make the score 14-6. The 45-yard drive was set up when Michael Woodson intercepted a Dwayne Calloway pass. Alphonso Ontiveros cut Carson’s lead to 14-9 with a 24-yard field goal in the second quarter. Carson (3-1), The Times’ No. 1-ranked team, was led by Goree, who had 104 yards in 8 carries and Holmes, who finished with 96 yards in 9 carries. San Fernando, ranked No. 6 by The Times, is 2-2.

Roosevelt 3, Garfield 0--In front of 21,000 fans at East Los Angeles College, Francisco Vasquez kicked a17-yard field goal with 59 seconds remaining in the 51st annual meeting between the schools. The Rough Riders (3-1) got into position when quarterback Hector Islava hit Ramon Galindo with back-to-back passes totaling 48 yards. Garfield (1-3) missed an opportunity for a 3-0 lead a minute before Vasquez’s kick when Gabriel Rico had his 28-yard field-goal attempt blocked by Roosevelt.

Fairfax 27, Locke 13--Senior tailback Michael Hale gained 117 yards and scored twice on short runs to lead the Lions, The Times’ No. 8-ranked team, to a nonleague win at Fairfax. Fairfax (4-0) also scored on a 76-yard pass play from Rodney Dorsett to Mark McGroarty and got field goals of 24 and 27 yards from Luis Calderon. Also for the Lions, LaTrelle Barnes had 89 yards in 13 carries. Locke is 2-2.

Los Angeles 18, Marshall 12--Paul Grimes hit Danny Lewis with an 83-yard touchdown pass play, and Marvin Calyen returned an interception 26 yards to break a 6-6 fourth-quarter tie and give Los Angeles (3-1) a nonleague victory at Marshall (1-3). Lewis caught the ball at the Romans’ 30 and outran the Marshall defense for the touchdown. Grimes completed only 7 of 25 passes but for 201 yards. Lewis caught four passes for 149 yards. Floyd Anderson had five sacks to lead the Los Angeles defense, as both teams had six turnovers.

Southern Section Norco 41, Perris 21--Wide David Kelly had 12 catches for 219 yards and junior quarterback Chris Kruswicki completed 16 of 18 for 306 yards for Norco in the Ivy League game at Norco. Kelly had touchdown receptions of 22, 7 and 25 yards. Norco is 4-1 overall and 2-0 in league. Perris is 3-2 and 1-1.

West Covina 29, Arcadia 6--Senior Leland Adams had 15 carries for 190 yards, scored on runs of 70 and 60 yards and completed a 2-yard pass to Mike Culwell for a third touchdown in the nonleague game at West Covina. Spartan quarterback completed just 5 of 14 passes for 108 yards and 2 touchdowns. West Covina is 4-0 and Arcadia is 2-3.

Lynwood 26, Paramount 0--Anthony Burnett completed 8 of 11 passes for 263 yards and 2 touchdowns to Marc Birch, who had 5 catches for 175 yards, in the San Gabriel Valley league game at Lynwood. The Knight defense held Paramount to just 97 yards in offense and didn’t allow the Pirates inside the Lynwood 30-yard line. Lynwood is 4-1 overall and 1-0 in league. Paramount is 2-2 and 0-2.

Riverside Poly 21, San Gorgonio 20--After trailing, 14-0, at halftime, Riverside Poly tied the game with two third-quarter touchdowns only to see San Gorgonio take a 20-14 lead with eight minutes remaining when Mark Alley returned an interception 76 yards for a touchdown. The Spartans run for two points failed. Riverside Poly then tied the score at 20 on Bruce Campbell’s two-yard run, and Kevin Hussey provided the margin of victory with his extra-point kick. Visiting Riverside Poly improved his record overall record to 5-0 and its Citrus Belt League mark to 2-0. San Gorgonio is now 3-2 and 1-1.

Fontana 13, Colton 7--Quarterback Barry Titus’ 27-yard touchdown pass to receiver Mike McClellan with 49 seconds remaining in the first half to give Fontana the lead, 13-7, in the Citrus Belt League game at Colton. Fontana held Colton twice in the fourth quarter at the four and the six-yard lines. Fontana, The Times’ No. 2-ranked team, is 5-0 overall and 2-0 in league. Colton is 1-4 and 0-1.
