Rookie Perry Berezan scored two goals in a six-goal suspended second period to rally Calgary to an 8-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets Friday night in the Flames’ season opener.

Lanny McDonald contributed a goal and three assists.

The Flames trailed, 3-0, after one period but stormed back for a tie before the contest was stopped at 13:49 of the second period in order to assess 86 penalty minutes and six ejections for a bench-clearing brawl.

Calgary scored three more goals, including Berezan’s pair, during the 6:11 tacked on before the final period.

Ejected from Winnipeg were Brian Hayward, Dave Ellett, Tim Watters and assistant coach Rick Bowness, who took a poke at Flame Tim Hunter. Calgary lost Hunter and rookie Mark D’Amour.

Watters was the first off the bench, which carried an automatic three-game suspension in addition to an automatic $1,000 fine for the Jets.
