Oregon State Is Blanked Again, 34-0

Quarterback Mark Rypien ran for two touchdowns and his backup, Ed Blount, rushed for another as Washington State rolled to a 34-0 Pacific 10 victory over Oregon State Saturday.

The Cougars shut out an opponent for the first time since 1981, boosting their record to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

The Beavers (2-4 and 1-2) lost their fourth in a row and haven’t scored a touchdown in three games. They were blanked for the second week in a row, having lost to USC, 63-0, the previous Saturday.

Washington State moved the ball all afternoon as the outmatched Beavers failed to handle the Cougars’ veer attack.

The Cougars scored on the first play of the second quarter on Rypien’s one-yard dive, culminating a 60-yard drive.

Four plays later, Washington State freshman Ron Lee blocked Glenn Pena’s punt to set up a two-yard touchdown run by Rueben Mayes, giving the Cougars a 14-0 lead with 11:10 left in the half.

Washington State, which snapped a three-game losing streak, padded its advantage when Blount directed a 79-yard, 14-play drive that ended with his 12-yard keeper. That score made it 20-0 with two minutes left in the half.

Another one-yard keeper by Rypien capped a 72-yard, 10-play drive that made it 27-0 with 4:50 left in the third quarter.

A one-yard touchdown run by Junior Tautalatasi with 6:22 left wrapped up the scoring.

The Beavers were without standout receiver Reggie Bynum most of the game. Bynum, the leading pass catcher in the Pac-10, left in the first quarter with a leg injury, although X-rays showed the injury wasn’t serious.
