24 Golf Pros Compete in World Event

Bernhard Langer of West Germany and Sandy Lyle of Britain, winners of this year’s Masters and British Open, lead a list of 24 professionals for next month’s $800,000 World Championship of Golf on the island of Maui, it was announced.

Langer and Lyle will be on the European team in the competition, which will be held Nov. 6-9 at the Kapalua Bay Course. Also on the European squad will be Seve Ballesteros of Spain, who has won the Masters once and the British Open twice.

The U.S. squad will include this year’s leading money winner on the PGA Tour, Curtis Strange, and Raymond Floyd, who has won the Masters and two PGA championships. Also on the team are Lanny Wadkins, Mark O’Meara, Calvin Peete and Corey Pavin. Roger Maltbie will be the alternate.

Rounding out the European team will be Sam Torrance, Howard Clark and Gordon Brand Junior, all of Great Britain. The alternate will be Ian Woosnam.

Isao Aoki, Kikuo Arai, Tommy Nakajima, Naomichi Ozaki, Shinsake Maeda and Tateo Ozaki will make up the Japanese team and the Australia-New Zealand squad will be comprised of David Graham, winner of both the U.S. Open and PGA titles, Greg Norman, Graham Marsh, Wayne Grady, Ian Baker-Finch and Brian Jones with Roger Davis alternate.

The players were chosen on the basis of a world money-winnings list.

The tournament format is for round-robin competition among the four teams at stroke play, with $50,000 to each member of the winning team. Also, $50,000 will go to the individual low scorer.
