Tennis Roundup : Czechs Beat U.S. in Federation Cup

U.S. Open champion Hana Mandlikova defeated Kathy Jordan, 7-5, 6-1, in a rain-interrupted match, giving Czechoslovakia an unbeatable 2-0 led over the United States today in the finals of the Federation Cup at Tokyo.

Helena Sukova gave top-seeded Czechoslovakia a 1-0 lead by beating American Elise Burgin, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 on Sunday. Mandlikova was leading Kathy Jordan, 7-5, 3-0, 30-15, when they were forced to stop. The match was concluded the following day, which is today (Monday) in Tokyo and Sunday in the United States. The doubles was to be played later today despite Czechoslovakia’s victory.

The tournament is the women’s version of the Davis Cup.

The United States, seeded second, reached the final by defeating Australia, 2-1. In the deciding doubles match, which was suspended at 2-2 in the third set Saturday by darkness, Jordan and Burgin overcame Elizabeth Smylie and Wendy Turnbull, 0-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Matt Anger held off fellow American Brad Gilbert, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, to win the $250,000 South African Open championship at Johannesburg.

The victory was the first ever in a Grand Prix final for the 22-year-old Anger, and the $42,000 winner’s prize was his biggest payday ever.

Top-seeded Yannick Noah of France won the $175,000 Nabisco Grand Prix tournament, defeating second-seeded Tomas Smid of Czechoslovakia, 6-4, 6-4, at Toulouse, France.

Noah served 17 aces and scored with brilliant backhand passing shots.

Top-seeded American Paul Annacone scored a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Kelly Evernden of New Zealand in the final of the $100,000 GWA Mazda tournament at Brisbane, Australia. Annacone earned $16,000.
