A downtown food distribution center for homeless people is in desperate need of food and blankets, the shelter’s coordinators said.

The City of Angels Mission, 1477 Market St., which has fed about 3,000 homeless people during the past week, has been inundated with needy people since the closing of the San Diego Rescue Mission on 5th Avenue downtown.

The need for blankets is especially acute because of the arrival of cooler weather, the Rev. Terrell Garrett said.

Although the mission does not provide overnight shelter, it does provide three meals a day to families, senior citizens and transients.

Garrett said that canned goods, bread, cold cuts and salads, such as cole slaw and potato salad are especially needed.

The food, blankets or cash donations can be taken directly to the mission.
