SDSU’s Gwynn Is Nominated for Award
Chris Gwynn, a two-time collegiate All-American while at San Diego State, has been nominated for the 1985 Golden Spikes Award, which goes annually to the top amateur baseball player in the nation.
Gwynn, who now plays in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ farm system, was one of nine players nominated for the honor by the U.S. Baseball Federation.
Gwynn, whose brother, Tony, plays for the Padres, set four career and eight single-season records during his three years at SDSU.
His best season was 1984, his sophomore year, when he hit .383, with 19 home runs, 31 doubles, nine triples, and drove in 95 runs in 89 games. His 137 hits set an NCAA record that was broken in 1985.
As a senior, Gwynn was bothered by a series of injuries and played in just 39 games. He still recorded a .403 average, with two homers and 37 RBIs.
