Mogambo ran away from four other 2-year-olds for a one-sided victory in the $279,000 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park in New York.
Mogambo, ridden by Angel Cordero, moved into contention approaching the quarter-pole, took over from pace-setting Groovy after straightening for home and won by 9 3/4 lengths in a time of 1:37 1/5 for the mile on a fast track.
Groovy held on for second place by a head over Mr. Classic. The 1-2 favorite, Ketoh, unbeaten in his first two starts, was 1 3/4 lengths behind Mr. Classic.
