WFC Roundup : Santa Clara Wins on Smith’s Late Score

Bryan Smith rushed for the winning touchdown with 2:24 left in the game and Paris Greenwood intercepted a Jeff Keppert pass at the Santa Clara 21-yard line in the waning moments at Santa Clara to preserve the Broncos’ 10-6 victory Saturday over Cal State Hayward.

Santa Clara (5-1, 2-0) marched 80 yards in six plays for their winning margin. The key play was a 55-yard pass play from quarterback Greg Calcagno to wide receiver Kevin Collins on the first play of the drive. It put the ball on the Hayward State 25 and Smith, who rushed eight times for 33 yards, ran it in from five yards out.

Doug Davidovich opened the scoring, kicking a 22-yard field goal with 50 seconds left in the half for a 3-0 Santa Clara lead. Hayward tied it with 12:29 left in the third quarter on a 40-yard field goal by Vito Cangemi, who booted another from 36 yards away with five minutes left in the game for a 6-3 advantage.

Calcagno, who was intercepted twice in the nonconference game, completed 18 of his 31 passes for 182 yards, most of which came on the bomb to Collins.

“Greg was threre when it counted and that’s the most important thing,” Santa Clara Coach Terry Malley said. “We also played outstanding defense tonight.”

Hayward St. (4-2, 0-1) relied on a three-quarterback shuttle system with little success. Keppert completed four of six for 45 yds, Bill Neal was six for 12 and 41 yards and Gerald Capps was two of four for 22 yards.

Santa Clara was led on the ground by tailback Matt Shaw, who carried 25 times for 84 yards.

Cal Poly SLO 44, St. Mary’s 0--Seniors Jim Gleed and Paulo Pueliu each rushed for three touchdowns and the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo defense held visiting St. Mary’s to 187 total yards to record its first shutout of the season.

The Mustangs, whose last shutout came Nov. 17, 1984--a 48-0 rout of Cal Lutheran--opened the scoring in the first quarter with a seven-yard scoring run by Gleed, who carried 20 times for 101 yards.

Cal Poly, 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the WFC, broke open the game in the second period with a pair of one-yard scoring runs by Pueliu and Gleed and a 20-yard burst by Pueliu, who totaled 44 yards on 10 carries.

The Mustangs’ second touchdown was set up by a 27-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Robert Perez (12 for 21, 138 yards) to wide receiver Sheldon Moore, whose five receptions for 65 yards led the Mustangs.
