Fullerton College continued its domination over Bakersfield Saturday night, beating the Renegades, 16-0, in a Pac-9 game in front of 1,000 in Fullerton District Stadium.

It was the Hornets’ 10th straight victory over Bakersfield (2-2, 4-2). The Hornet defense stopped Bakersfield early, allowing only eight yards passing and 42 yards in total offense in the first half.

Bakersfield quarterback Manuel Garcia was sacked six times for a loss of 18 yards. The Renegades also fumbled twice in the first half. The second fumble set up the Hornets’ first touchdown. Fullerton lineman John Healy recovered a Garcia fumble on the Bakersfield 37-yard line.

The Hornets (2-1, 3-2) overcame a clipping penalty with a 26-yard pass play from quarterback Richard Williams to fullback Dean Hankins, who was the leading receiver in the game with 6 receptions for 73 yards.

Two rushes by tailback John Green for 13 yards put the ball at the Bakersfield 3. Green scored on a three-yard run, making the score 9-0, at the end of the first quarter.

Fullerton had taken an early 3-0 lead on a 35-yard field goal by Todd Reynolds. Green, who rushed for 144 yards on 24 carries, scored again in the second quarter on a 4-yard run to close the game’s scoring.

The Hornets advanced 62 yards on six plays before Green’s touchdown. Fullerton quarterback Richard Williams completed three passes on the drive to three receivers for 55 yards. He hit wide receiver Richard Rollins with a 23-yard pass to get the ball to the 4-yard line.

The Hornet defense preserved the shutout in the fourth quarter by stopping Bakersfield four times from inside the Fullerton four-yard line.

Fullerton could have had wider margin of victory but turnovers hindered them. The Hornets fumbled five times, and Williams threw two interceptions. Renegade safety Phil Forch had both interceptions, each near the Bakersfield goal line.

Williams, a freshman starting his second game, completed 19 of 33 passes of 302 yards, and led the offense to 524 total yards. The Hornets rushed for 243 yards. Neither team scored in the second half because of good defensive play. Bakersfield survived numerous Fullerton threats but could not take advantage of the opportunities afforded them to score.
