The Pittsburgh Steelers have cut players known to be using drugs, team President Dan Rooney said, but he refused to name the players or the seasons involved.
If a Steeler player admitted having a drug problem, “We would first send him to our doctor, who’s one of the foremost alcohol and drug physicians in the country,” Rooney said in an interview with the Beaver County Times.
“The doctor would evaluate him. We would take his recommendation about what should be done, whether it’s to put him in rehab, counsel the player, monitor him and let him play, whatever. We would make a decision on whether we should release the guy. We are in the football business. If we feel he will be a problem for us, he won’t be on the team. One thing we know about the people who take drugs is that you can’t depend on them.”
