Costa Mesa : $1,200 Missing: That’s Loot in the Fast Lane
Motorists who happened to be on the San Diego and Costa Mesa freeways Saturday when bank robbers began throwing their loot out of a car window apparently made off with about $1,200 in cash before police and California Highway Patrol officers put a halt to their frantic scavenging.
The complaint filed against the two suspects says that they took $8,415 from the Glendale Federal Savings & Loan branch in Costa Mesa, and an FBI spokesman said Thursday that all but about $1,200 was recovered.
The loss was less than authorities feared at first. Initial estimates put the loss at about $5,000.
Officers who were pursuing the robbers said the fleeing men began throwing bunches of cash, much of it $100 bills, out their car window as they turned from the San Diego Freeway north onto the Costa Mesa Freeway. They were eventually captured when their car spun out on a Santa Ana street.
Police reported finding cash scattered over 3 miles of freeway.
