Buoniconti Injury Similar to Stingley’s
Citadel linebacker Marc Buoniconti suffered a critical neck injury similar to one that paralyzed former Boston Patriot Darryl Stingley, officials in Johnson City, Tenn., said Sunday.
Buoniconti, 19, son of former Miami Dolphin All-Pro linebacker Nick Buoniconti, was injured Saturday while tackling a runner during his team’s 28-21 victory over East Tennessee State.
“Marc’s condition is being constantly monitored. He remains in the intensive care unit of the Johnson City Medical Center. His condition is listed as critical,” said Johnson City Medical Center nursing supervisor Betty Lincoln.
“Marc has suffered a cervical injury similar to that received by Darryl Stingley of the Boston Patriots,” the statement said.
Stingley was paralyzed when he was tackled Aug. 12, 1978, by then-Oakland Raider free safety Jack Tatum in an exhibition game at Oakland.
“We could not give a prognosis right now because of the nature of the injury. It takes a while for the initial shock to wear off,” said Aubrey Lee, the medical center’s chief spokesman. “He is medicated but alert and able to communicate.”
