Local News in Brief : Driver Suspected of Drug Use in Halloween Crash Out on Bail
A 32-year-old Hacienda Heights woman, who police said caused a chain-reaction accident in North Hollywood that injured 12 people, was released from custody early Friday on $2,500 bail, Los Angeles police said.
Shelly Lowry was arrested Thursday evening on suspicion of driving under the influence of a controlled substance and held at Van Nuys Jail, Detective Don Bellante said.
Police said a car driven by Lowry rear-ended another car on Vineland Avenue, then swerved into opposing traffic and crashed head-on into a third car, causing the chain-reaction crash of four vehicles.
At least three injured children in Halloween costumes lay about the crash scene.
The most seriously injured person in the 6:50 p.m. accident was a San Fernando woman, six months pregnant, who was treated for a broken arm and cuts, Bellante said. A Pacoima man was treated for a broken jaw, he said. Both were released from hospitals Friday, Bellante said.
The accident tied up traffic for about two hours, Bellante said.
