On an afternoon when 16th-ranked Louisiana State sputtered on offense, the Tigers’ defense took over for a 14-0 Southeastern Conference shutout of archrival Mississippi Saturday at Jackson, Miss.

“I’m glad our defense came along with us today,” LSU Coach Bill Arnsparger said. “It’s a great group. Our players have worked hard and I congratulate them on an excellent effort.”

The shutout was LSU’s second in a row. The Tigers beat Kentucky, 10-0, in their last outing. It marked the first time since 1962 that LSU posted consecutive shutouts.

LSU, 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the SEC, could manage only 245 yards on offense. But it was enough because of a strong defensive effort led by linebackers Michael Brooks and Toby Caston, and end Roland Barbay.

Ole Miss, 3-4-1 and 1-3, suffered a big blow with 4 1/2 minutes left in the second quarter when regular quarterback Kent Austin was sidelined when he reinjured his left knee. He may be lost for the rest of the season.

“That hurt, no doubt about it,” Ole Miss Coach Billy Brewer said. “I can’t say if he’ll be back. We won’t know until we check on it.”

LSU scored on consecutive possessions late in the first quarter and early in the second, then let its defense take over. Dalton Hilliard scored the touchdowns on runs of one and four yards.

Alabama 44, Mississippi State 28--At Tuscaloosa, Ala., Mike Shula threw two scoring passes to Al Bell, and Bobby Humphrey scored twice as the Crimson Tide kept its Southeastern Conference hopes alive.

Shula and Bell teamed on scoring plays of 5 and 21 yards. Humphrey dived one yard for one score and went 14 yards for another. Van Tiffin hit field goals of 43, 22 and 51 yards, and Alabama’s other score came on a three-yard run by Doug Allen.

The victory gave Alabama a 6-2 record, 3-1 in the SEC, and assured the Tide of a winning season after it finished 5-6 in 1984, its first losing year since 1957.

Mississippi State, 5-4 and 0-4 in the SEC, scored on three passes by Don Smith, two to James Bloodworth of 19 and 46 yards and one to Louis Clark of seven yards. Hank Phillips, State’s leading rusher with 117 yards, got the other Bulldog touchdown on a one-yard run.

Georgia 58, Tulane 3--At Athens, Ga., freshman tailback Tim Worley ran for a pair of touchdowns and caught a 44-yard scoring pass as 18th-ranked Georgia crushed winless Tulane.

The Bulldogs (6-1-1) scored on six of their first seven possessions.

Worley, who scored on runs of one and four yards, caught the 44-yard pass from sophomore quarterback James Jackson. Jackson scored a touchdown on a 17-yard run.

Georgia also scored on David McCluskey’s nine-yard run and Lars Tate’s one-yard plunge. Ronnie Hammonds scored on a 12-yard run, David Dukes went 5 yards and Steve Crumley kicked a 21-yard field goal.

Tulane (0-8) got a 20-yard field goal by Wayne Clements after a 79-yard drive bogged down at the Georgia three in the second quarter.

Tennessee 40, Rutgers 0--At Knoxville, Tenn., Daryl Dickey, playing for the injured Tony Robinson, completed 16 of 21 passes for 194 yards and 1 touchdown as 19th-ranked Tennessee (4-1-2) rolled up 525 yards of total offense.

Tennessee Coach Johnny Majors said it signaled that this team is back on track after losing its star quarterback.

“I don’t know how I could be more pleased with the way we played,” he said. “It was a game we needed to win badly and one in which we were able to play a lot of our people. Our offense, our defense and our kicking all contributed.”

Freshman tailback Keith Davis scored two touchdowns, one on a seven-yard pass from Dickey. Davis also ran for a one-yard touchdown and finished with 65 yards rushing and 56 yards on 6 pass receptions.

Kentucky 23, East Tennessee State 13--Ivy Joe Hunter’s eight-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter sparked the Wildcats (5-3) to a surprisingly difficult win over East Tennessee State (0-7-1) at Lexington, Ky.
