The state issued a warning against eating waterfowl killed in the 75,000-acre Grasslands region of western Merced County because of possible contamination of the birds by selenium. A similar warning was issued last year on consuming birds taken from the selenium-tainted Kesterson Wildlife Refuge. The warning on ducks and other waterfowl came from the state Department of Fish and Game. Spokeswoman Sandra Wolf said the step was recommended by the state Department of Health Services, on the basis of data gathered in a study of duck tissues carried out by the Department of Fish and Game.
