Tennis Roundup : Lendl Beats Becker in Exhibition

Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia, the No. 1 player in the world, proved too tough for rising star Boris Becker, bouncing back from a slow start for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 exhibition victory in in front of 7,500 fans Monday night at West Berlin.

Becker, who will be 18 in 17 days, won the first set in 27 minutes of aggressive, error-free play.

Lendl, who the day before beat John McEnroe to win the Invitational European Indoor Tournament at Antwerp, Belgium, was in command from then on.

In another exhibition, John McEnroe defeated Anders Jarryd of Sweden, 6-3, 6-3, before 5,000 spectators at Helsinki, Finland.

McEnroe plays Ramesh Krishnan of India Wednesday in his first match of the Stockholm Open. McEnroe is three-time defending champion of the tournament, which began Monday.

Sixth-seeded Scott Davis rallied to defeat Davis Cup hero Michael Westphal of West Germany, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, at Stockholm, Sweden, in the opening round of the $375,000 Stockholm Open.

Peter Lundgren of Sweden knocked out Tomas Smid of Czechoslovakia, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, for the biggest upset of the first day.

In other first-round matches, Andres Gomez of Ecuador defeated Henrik Sundstrom of Sweden 6-3, 6-1; Jakob Hlasek beat fellow-Swiss Heinz Gunthardt, 6-2, 6-2; Emilio Sanchez of Spain downed Michiel Schapers of the Netherlands, 7-5, 6-1; Mike Leach edged Kent Carlsson of Sweden, 7-6, 6-4, and Sergio Casal of Spain outlasted David Pate, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6.

Unseeded Grace Kim pulled off the first upset of the $150,000 Florida Federal Open by outlasting sixth-seeded Kate Gompert, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, at Largo, Fla.

Fifth-seeded Peanut Louie tripped Mercedes Paz of Argentina 6-3, 6-3; seventh-seeded Terry Phelps downed Gabriella Mosca of Argentina, 6-1, 6-0, and eighth-seeded Stephanie Rehe slipped past Cecilia Fernandez, 6-4, 6-2.

In other first-round matches, Lisa Bonder defeated Shawn Flotz, 6-3, 6-1; Pam Casale ousted Mary Joe Fernandez, 6-2, 6-3, and Laura Gildemeister eliminated Jane Forman, 6-3, 6-1.
