Leaking water has done irreparable damage to Depression-era murals in San Francisco’s Coit Tower, an art expert has told the San Francisco Arts Commission. John Burke of the Oakland Museum said that some areas of the frescoes are beyond repair. He called the murals “priceless” and added, “There is no way they could be replaced.” The panels were painted on wet plaster in 1933 under the auspices of the federal Civil Works Administration by 26 artists and 19 assistants working for six months. City officials are allocating $700,000 to repair the leaky tower.
