Redondo Beach : Police Dog Bought for $1,000

The Police Department will get a fourth unit for its canine program this winter as a result of a City Council decision Tuesday to purchase a dog for $1,000 from the Zollhundeschule canine school in West Germany.

The dog has been offered to the city through the Police Department’s dog handler, who is now enrolled in an extensive training program at the school in Nuremberg. The $1,000 price tag is substantially lower than the $6,500 it would cost to purchase a dog of similar quality in this country, according to Assistant City Manager Ray Griest.

The cost of the fourth unit, including the training of officers, will be $11,917 for the first year. Councilman Archie Snow said a fund-raiser held by the Rotary Club of North Redondo Beach Oct. 30 raised $2,500 for the new dog.

The canine program has been in operation since 1979. According to Police Capt. Ray Graham, the additional unit will ensure that there is a canine team on all watches and allow one team to be trained in narcotics detection.
