Seth Hancock, owner of Claiborne Farm in Lexington, Ky., offered a top basketball recruit $20,000 in 1973 to attend the University of Kentucky, according to Sports Illustrated.
Dave Batton, who ultimately signed with Notre Dame, said Hancock offered him the money for four summers’ work at the thoroughbred horse farm.
Sports Illustrated reported that, as the result of an investigation into Kentucky’s football and basketball program in 1976, the NCAA told Hancock and 11 other athletic boosters to disassociate themselves from the program.
Hancock denied the allegations.
