Bernhard Langer and Sandy Lyle led the European team to a one-point lead over the United States Wednesday in the first round of the inaugural Nissan Cup World Championship of Golf.

The Europeans beat Japan, 19-3, and the Americans won from Australia, 18-4, in the round-robin, four-team competition featuring the leading players from the world’s four major golf tours.

In the individual competition, Curtis Strange, the leading money-winner on the American PGA Tour, and Jet Ozaki of Japan shared the first-day lead with 6-under-par 66s on the Bay course at the Kapalua Golf Club.
