New ‘Centennial Square’ Urged for Pasadena
John C. Wood, chairman of the Pasadena Centennial Coordinating Committee, has proposed to the city’s board of directors the creation of a “Centennial Square” and offered financial support of up to $5,000 from the committee as a first step.
He urged that Garfield Avenue be closed between Ramona and Union streets, and Holly Street between Garfield and Marengo avenues on the west side of City Hall, and that they be replaced with a grassy mall. He called the concept, conceived by the Coordinating Committee’s lasting gifts committee chaired by Bessie Shenk, the “greening” of the City Hall.
Wood also proposed that the design of Centennial Square be determined through a public competition judged by a jury of professionals in the urban design field. He also suggested that the square be dedicated on the city’s 100th birthday, June 19, 1986.
