Pincay Wins Five, Including Feature
Laffit Pincay, the nation’s leading jockey this year, rode five winners Saturday at Santa Anita, including Nostalgia’s Star in the $106,200 Alibhai Handicap.
Pincay, who has ridden six winners four times in his career, twice at Santa Anita and once each at Hollywood Park and Del Mar, missed No. 6 when Mark in the Sky, his mount in the last race, dropped far back early and could finish only fifth after a rally through the stretch.
According to Daily Racing Form figures, Pincay had $12.1 million in purses through Nov. 3, enough to break the record of $12 million that Chris McCarron set last year. Closest to Pincay in the standings is Jorge Velasquez, who trails by about $1.6 million.
Nostalgia’s Star, winner in only one of 13 previous starts this year, rallied from last in a six-horse field, overtook Mane Magic, the early leader, near the sixteenth pole and won by 2 1/2 lengths. Favored Government Corner finished third.
Nostalgia’s Star, paying $6 to win as the second betting choice, ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:42 2/5 and earned $60,950 for his owners--Margaret Robbins, Fred Duckett and Mary Jane Hinds--who bought him last year for $95,000. Robbins’ son, Jay, trains the 3-year-old colt.
