Hockey star Pelle Lindbergh, attached to life-support systems since a weekend car crash, was declared dead Tuesday night after doctors removed his vital organs for donations, the Philadelphia Flyers said.

The 26-year-old goalie had been declared clinically dead at 9:15 a.m. Monday after the necessary period of observation since the car accident in Somerdale, N.J., a team spokeswoman said.

Lindbergh, declared brain dead hours after his souped-up Porsche crashed into the concrete steps of a school, was attached to life-support systems since the crash while his parents decided whether to donate his vital organs for transplant.

A team doctor, speaking for the Swedish athlete’s family, said the Lindberghs hoped the transplants would mean the All-Star goaltender’s final contribution might be to save some other people.
