Local News in Brief : DWP Announces Plan to Build New Station in Canoga Park

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has announced plans to build a new electrical distribution station in the Canoga Park area.

DWP officials, who have scheduled a community meeting Nov. 19 to discuss the project, said they are considering a site on the north side of Victory Boulevard between Randi Avenue and Calabasas Creek. They said the station would not burn fuel or cause pollution.

A distributing station receives higher-voltage electricity and transforms it into lower-voltage power for distribution to customers.

The new station is needed because of increased demand on five nearby stations, the DWP said. The proposed station would serve commercial and residential customers in an area bounded on the north by Sherman Way, on the south by Oxnard Street, on the east by Owensmouth Avenue and on the west by Woodlake Avenue, according to the DWP.

Carl D. Haase, DWP engineer for environmental and governmental affairs, said that, although a site has been proposed, “we plan to work with local residents during this early project planning stage.”

DWP engineers will be on hand to answer questions about the project at the 7:30 p.m. meeting Tuesday in the Fellowship Hall of the Woodland Hills United Methodist Church, 5650 Shoup Ave., Woodland Hills.

The new station, to be built in 1987, would occupy about one acre, the DWP said. The station would house electrical equipment for switching, regulating and transforming line voltage and would be enclosed by a 16-foot-high wall, according to the DWP.
