A27-year-old Sepulveda man was in critical condition Thursday after his speeding car struck a freeway center divider and flipped three times, throwing him out of the car Wednesday night in Van Nuys, the California Highway Patrol said.

Elias Avalos Jr. was driving south 70 to 75 m.p.h. on the San Diego Freeway just north of Victory Boulevard when he swerved to avoid a slower vehicle and struck the center divider at about 7:45 p.m., CHP Officer Kenn Rosenberg said.

Witnesses said Avalos, who was alone in the car, seemed to have been trying to get the attention of another vehicle when the accident occurred.
