Share

The Milwaukee Brewers, who finished next to last in the American League East, released high-salaried relief pitcher Rollie Fingers Thursday.

The Brewers also released pitcher Rick Waits.

Fingers, who holds the major league record of 341 saves, was used sparingly by the Brewers in the second half of the season. Fingers was 1-6 and had a 5.04 earned-run average and 17 saves in 47 games with the Brewers in 1985.

In five seasons with the club, Fingers was 13-17, with a 2.54 ERA and 97 saves. He missed parts of the 1982 and 1984 seasons and the entire 1983 season with injuries, but in the strike-shortened 1981 season he saved 28 games and was named the league’s most valuable player and Cy Young Award winner.
