Pacific-10 Roundup : Sun Devils Stay in Rose Bowl Race

Mike Crawford rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns, and Jeff Van Raaphorst threw a 58-yard bomb to Aaron Cox as Arizona State held on to beat Stanford, 21-14, in a Pacific-10 football game Saturday night at Tempe.

The Sun Devils led, 21-0, at halftime en route to their sixth straight win, raising their record to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the conference and keeping alive their hopes for a possible Pac-10 title and Rose Bowl berth.

Stanford, losing for the second time in the last three games, fell to 3-7 overall and 2-5 in conference.

However, the Cardinal made a game of it as quarterback John Paye scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak with 3:17 left in the third quarter, and Brian Morris scored from the one-yard line to cap a 16-play, 80-yard drive with five minutes remaining in the game.

“ASU showed a lot of firepower in the first half, and they had the weapons to make the big play,” Stanford Coach Jack Elway said. “We had no running game at all in the first half, but we gave Paye some time to throw in the second half, and we came back pretty well.”

Paye completed 29 of 41 passes for 211 yards and 1 interception. He also was sacked twice.

Cardinal junior fullback Brad Muster caught 12 passes, giving him 73 receptions this season.

Van Raaphorst was 16 of 24 for 230 yards and no interceptions in front of 64,003 at 70,021-seat Sun Devil Stadium.

Arizona 20, Oregon 8--Flanker Jeff Fairholm scored on a 57-yard pass play and tailback David Adams on an eight-yard run as the Wildcats beat the Ducks at Tucson.

Arizona’s defense turned in an outstanding effort as the Wildcats kept their hopes alive for a bowl game bid, improving their season record to 7-3 and Pac-10 mark to 4-2. Oregon dropped to 2-3 in the conference and 4-5 overall.

Arizona placekicker Max Zendejas broke a school scoring record with two extra points and two field goals, giving him a career mark of 343 points. The old record of 337 points was set by Art Luppino in 1956.

Washington State 64, Montana State 14--Rueben Mayes rushed for 157 yards and four touchdowns to pace Washington State to a 64-14 nonconference rout of Montana State at Pullman, Wash.

Mayes, who carried 21 times, boosted his season-rushing total to 1,069 yards, making him the first Cougar to have back-to-back seasons of more than 1,000 yards. Mayes rushed for 1,637 yards last season.

Mayes moved into seventh place, ahead of USC’s Mike Garrett, among Pac-10 career-rushing leaders with 3,352 yards.

Mayes had touchdown runs of 1, 2, 6 and 13 yards.
