East Roundup : Syracuse Wins 4th Straight

Syracuse wide receiver Scott Schwedes caught eight passes for a school-record 249 yards, and Don McPherson threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Orangemen defeated Boston College, 41-21, Saturday at Syracuse, N.Y.

In a game that extended two streaks, the Orangemen (6-3) won their fourth straight and Boston College (3-8) lost its fifth straight.

McPherson, who completed 12 of 18 passes for 291 yards, passed to wide receiver Mike Siano for second-quarter touchdowns of 16 and 5 yards. The first one was deflected into Siano’s hands by Eagle cornerback Gerrick McPhearson.

Schwedes, a junior, caught a 45-yard pass at the goal line for a touchdown with 2:43 left to play to run the score to 38-21. He already had snapped Art Monk’s school record of 188 receiving yards, set in 1977 against Navy with 14 catches.

Army 49, Memphis State 7--At West Point, N.Y., Rob Healy passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two others as Army steamrolled Memphis State in snow-covered Michie Stadium.

The Cadets (8-2) extended their home unbeaten streak to 12 games over two seasons while dropping Memphis State to 2-7-2.

West Virginia 23, Temple 10--Tailback Undra Johnson rushed for 206 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown run, and Charlie Baumann kicked three field goals as West Virginia rolled to a victory at Morgantown, W.Va.

Johnson, a 5-foot-9, 195-pound redshirt freshman, carried 35 times on the slippery turf at Mountaineer Field as West Virginia ran its record to 6-3-1. Temple finished its season at 4-7.

Rhode Island 56, Connecticut 42--Tom Ehrhardt threw for a Yankee Conference-record eight touchdowns, four apiece to Dameon Reilly and Brian Forster, to lead Rhode Island (9-2 overall, 5-0 in the conference) at Kingston, R.I.

Ehrhardt, a senior, completed 40 of 60 passes for 566 yards and finished the regular season with 35 touchdown passes and 4,213 yards.

Forster, with 16 receptions for 205 yards, caught touchdown passes of 23, 9, 7 and 6 yards. The senior finished the season with 115 catches and an NCAA-record 11.5 receptions per game average.

Rutgers 28, Colgate 14--Quarterback Joe Gagliardi came off the bench to engineer three second-half scoring drives, and running back Albert Smith scored two touchdowns to lead Rutgers at Piscataway, N.J.

The Scarlet Knights were shut out in their previous two games. The Red Raiders, meanwhile, had scored 125 points in their previous three games. Rutgers improved to 2-7-1. Colgate fell to 6-3-1.

Harvard 17, Penn 6--At Cambridge, Mass., Cecil Cox, Brent Wilkinson and Frank Ciota led a hard-hitting and alert Harvard defense with pass interceptions as the Crimson ended Penn’s 13-game Ivy League winning streak and moved into a tie with the Quakers for first place.

Harvard, improving its overall record to 7-2, is 5-1 in the Ivy League. Penn fell to 6-2-1 and 5-1.

Penn will shoot for at least a share of the Ivy championship for a fourth consecutive year against Dartmouth next week.

Princeton 21, Yale 12--Chris Ratliff ran for two touchdowns to help Princeton build a 21-0 third-quarter lead at Princeton, N.J., as the Tigers defeated Yale for only the second time in 19 years.

The victory boosted the Tigers to 4-5 overall and 4-2 in the Ivy League. It was the third straight loss for the Bulldogs, who fell to 3-4-1 and 2-3-1.

Brown 22, Dartmouth 0--Jamie Potkul rushed for 158 yards and scored one touchdown, and Alex Kos hit three field goals to lead Brown to an Ivy League victory at Hanover, N.H.

Kos, a sophomore, played when regular Chris Ingerslev was delayed playing soccer. He kicked two second-quarter field goals and one with 3:02 remaining to help the Bruins even their record at 4-4-1 and 3-3 in the Ivy League. Dartmouth is 2-6-1 and 2-3-1.

Cornell 21, Columbia 8--John Tagliaferri gained 114 yards in 28 carries and scored on three 1-yard touchdown plunges to lead Cornell to an Ivy League victory over winless Columbia at Ithaca, N.Y. Cornell is 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the Ivy League. Columbia (0-9, 0-6) has a 20-game losing streak.

Holy Cross 30, Boston U. 9--Tailback Gill Fenerty rushed for two second-quarter touchdowns at Worcester, Mass., as Holy Cross snapped a five-game winless streak.

The Crusaders are 4-5-1, while Boston is 3-7.
