Three fishermen in a drifting lifeboat were rescued about 80 miles southwest of Santa Barbara by a Coast Guard helicopter crew. The skipper of the California Maid, William Potts, and two crew members had to abandon ship after their vessel began taking on water. The three escaped injury but the 38-foot boat was lost, Coast Guard spokesman Pat Milton said. The fishermen were found within an hour by a Coast Guard plane and long-range helicopter based in San Diego, Milton said.
