Bellflower-Based Taxicab Firm Seeks 20-Cent Rate Increase in 19 Area Cities

The Day and Nite Yellow Cab Co., a Bellflower-based taxicab company and the only one serving the Southeast area of Los Angeles County, has submitted a request to 19 city councils for a rate increase of 20 cents per mile.

The increase is necessary because the company’s liability insurance rates have risen from $50,000 to just under $95,000 annually and Workers Compensation payments are up 25.8%, company president Duke Perrin said. He sent a letter Oct. 20 to 19 cities and so far has received five responses.

The city councils of Bellflower and Downey have approved the rate increase. The charges now stand at $2.20 for initial flag drop and $1.60 per mile.

The cab company does not need approval from the Bell Gardens council because that city repealed an ordinance four years ago that regulated cab fare increases, City Atty. Peter Wallin said.

The other cities served by the cab company are Bell, Cerritos, Commerce, Cudahy, East Los Angeles, Huntington Park, Lynwood, Maywood, Montebello, Norwalk, Paramount, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs, South Gate, Vernon and Whittier.
