Golf Roundup : Canadians Lead World Cup Field by Six Strokes

Canadians Dave Barr and Dan Halldorson played without a bogey and opened a six-stroke lead Friday in the second round of the 32nd World Cup and International Trophy golf tournament at La Quinta, Calif.

Halldorson compiled a six-under-par 66 on the Mountain course at the La Quinta Hotel and, in addition to leading Canada to a stranglehold lead in the team competition, took the individual lead at 134. Barr had a 69. That gave the Canadians a two-day total of 273.

England’s Howard Clark and Paul Way were second in the field of 31 teams at 279.

Americans Tom Kite and Lanny Wadkins fell nine strokes back. Wadkins shot a 70 for a 138, and Kite had a 74 for a 144.

Tsuneyuki Nakajima shot a four-under-par 68 for a 135 to take the lead in the $600,000 Dunlop Phoenix tournament at Miyazaki, Japan.

Spain’s Seve Ballesteros, who had shared the first-round lead with Nakajima, fired a 69 for a 136 and was tied for second with Taiwan’s Chen Tze-chung. Chen, who led the first three rounds in the U.S. Open this year, shot a 67.

Dan Sikes and Ken Still shot six-under-par 66s to take the first-round lead in a $200,000 PGA Seniors tournament at Boca Raton, Fla. John Brodie has a 67.
