Virginia tailback Barry Word, the country’s seventh-leading rusher, was suspended from school because of academic problems, and will miss the season finale against Maryland.
Word, whose 170 yards last weekend in a 24-22 victory over North Carolina gave him a school-record 1,224 yards, is the Atlantic Coast Conference’s leading rusher.
A campus newspaper, the Cavalier Daily, reported that Word will stand trial in the school’s student honor court Feb. 2 on a charge that he cheated on an exam.
