A Hawthorne city councilman who had just left a shopping center with his family was shot in the stomach late Friday night by a gunman demanding his car keys, police said.

David York, 48, a councilman and retired Hawthorne Police Department lieutenant, was listed in stable condition at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center after the 9:40 p.m. shooting in a parking lot of the South Bay Galleria in Redondo Beach, Sgt. John Nelson said.

York, accompanied by his wife, 8-year-old daughter and 8-year-old friend of his daughter, had just gotten into the family’s 1985 El Camino when a man wielding a handgun demanded that York turn over his keys, Nelson said. The gunman shot York in the stomach almost immediately, ordered the family to get out of the car and fled the scene in the vehicle, Nelson said.

Police said they are looking for both the suspect, described as a 6-foot-tall black man between the ages of 20 and 30, and the family’s maroon El Camino, license plate 2S28030.
