Agreement on UCLA Medical Project Sought

UCLA and the Held/Jones partnership are conducting negotiations for the development of an ambulatory-care complex that would include a new office building for the university’s clinical faculty, other medical facilities and a parking structure.

The agreement, when concluded, is expected to be the first of its kind on any University of California campus combining public and private funding of university improvements, according to Harold A. Held, partner in Held Properties. The other joint-venture participant is Jones Brothers Construction Co.

The approval of the university Board of Regents will be required for the project and its location, which is just northwest of the university gateway at Westwood Plaza and LeConte Avenue.

Participants hope to conclude negotiations and produce an environmental review of the project early in 1986 so that the project may be submitted to the Regents for approval in the spring, with construction starting in mid-1986 and completion by 1988.

The entire complex will add about 400,000 square feet of space to UCLA’s medical facilities. The new medical office building will provide offices for about 100 members of the clinical faculty and will include a pharmacy, clinical laboratory and other support facilities.

Held/Jones will be responsible for planning and construction of the entire project, including medical facilities and parking structure, and will own and operate the medical office building on completion.
