Hiding its usual running game behind a wishbone formation, Yale upset Harvard, 17-6, Saturday at New Haven, Conn., to deny its archrival a share of the Ivy League championship.

Mike Stewart and Rick Koze scored on short runs, and John Duryea added a 32-yard field goal to lead the Elis.

Operating out of the wishbone for the first time this season, Yale rushed for 254 yards, and its defense held the Crimson ground game to 27 net yards in 36 carries.

“We showed a wishbone formation, but we didn’t use it,” said Yale Coach Carmen Cozza, who gained his 100th victory. “We ran power football and just used three plays from the wishbone.”

With the victory in the 102nd renewal of the rivalry, Yale finished its season with a record of 4-4-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the league. Harvard ended its season 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the league.

Siano broke three Syracuse receiving records. His three touchdown receptions gave him eight for the season and 12 for his career, breaking the marks of seven in a season and 11 in a career set by Tony Gabriel from 1968-70.

Siano also broke Art Monk’s school record of 716 yards gained receiving in a season, set in 1979. The senior caught 8 passes for 119 yards and has 772 yards receiving this season.
