Tennis Roundup : Navratilova, Mandlikova in New South Wales Final
Defending champion Martina Navratilova rallied to defeat Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, Saturday in a semifinal match of the $150,000 New South Wales Open tennis championship at Sydney, Australia.
Navratilova, aiming to win the title for the third time in four years, will meet second-seeded Hana Mandlikova in today’s final. Mandlikova scored a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany in the other semifinal.
Ivan Lendl, ranked number one in the world, defeated Tim Mayotte, 6-4, 6-4, Saturday in the final of the Rio International Tennis Challenge at Canberra, Australia.
The Czech star never got into top gear because of a blister on his hand but was still too overpowering for the 14th-ranked Mayotte, who upset Sweden’s Mats Wilander Friday.
Defending champion Andres Gomez of Ecuador struggled to a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over seventh-seeded Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland to advance to the final of the $200,000 Hong Kong Seiko Super tournament.
Gomez, who earlier in the day beat fifth-seeded Matt Anger, 6-1, 6-2, in the quarterfinals, will meet sixth-seeded Aaron Krickstein in the final today. Krickstein beat Bud Schultz, 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinals.
