Pat Cash, Australia’s top tennis player, has withdrawn from the Australian Open, which begins at Kooyong on Monday.

In a statement released through the Lawn Tennis Assn. of Australia, Cash said that following medical advice he had decided not to play.

“Although I am making a good recovery from my back injury, I was advised not to commence tournament play until I was in better shape,” he said.

“I am hopeful of playing later this summer in Australia and also playing the WCT world doubles in London and the Nabisco Grand Prix masters doubles in New York early in January with John Fitzgerald.”

Cash has not played in a tournament since Wimbledon.
