Pat Cash, Australia’s top tennis player, has withdrawn from the Australian Open, which begins at Kooyong on Monday.

In a statement released through the Lawn Tennis Assn. of Australia, Cash said that following medical advice he had decided not to play.

“Although I am making a good recovery from my back injury, I was advised not to commence tournament play until I was in better shape,” he said.
