NCAA Water Polo Tournament : Top-Seeded Stanford Rolls Over Bucknell, 18-4

Ten Stanford players scored as the top-seeded Cardinal overwhelmed Bucknell, 18-4, in the NCAA water polo tournament at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach Friday.

In other first-round games, UCLA defeated Loyola of Chicago, 14-6; UC Santa Barbara edged Cal State Long Beach, 7-6, and UC Irvine beat Brown, 15-8.

Stanford, seeking its fifth national title, was led by Craig Klass, who scored four goals.

UCLA took a 5-1 lead and won easily over Loyola. Monty Yort scored four goals for the Bruins.

Santa Barbara came from behind against Long Beach as Antonio Iniguez scored two of his four goals in the fourth quarter.

The fifth-seeded Gauchos, who split two games with Stanford during the regular season, will play the Cardinal at 6 tonight.

“They’re the quickest team here, so you have to try to slow down their fast break,” Santa Barbara Coach Pete Snyder said.

In second-seeded Irvine’s victory over Brown, Jeff Campbell, Colin Wilson and J.R. Salvatore each scored four goals, and goalie Mark Maizel had 14 saves.

Irvine will play UCLA in the other semifinal game at 7:30 tonight. The winners will meet Sunday night.
