Downtown Bathhouse Damaged in Fire

Share

More than 50 people escaped unharmed Saturday morning from a downtown bathhouse that was badly damaged by a two-alarm fire.

When firefighters arrived at the two-story commercial building at Fourth Avenue and E Street at 8:25 a.m., four people were hanging out windows and calling for help, a San Diego Fire Department spokesman said.

Ladders were used to rescue the four, who suffered minor smoke inhalation and burns.

The maze of small rooms and cubicles in the Top Deck Baths hindered efforts by firefighters to extinguish the blaze, the spokesman said.

Damage to the property is estimated at $40,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
