COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Landry’s 3 Touchdowns Lead Houston Past Rice, 24-20
Houston quarterback Gerald Landry scored three touchdowns and became the first player in the school’s history to gain 2,000 total yards in a season Saturday when he led the Cougars to a 24-20 Southwest Conference victory over Rice.
Landry rushed for 104 yards in 28 carries and completed 11 of 20 passes for 144 yards.
The Cougars, who represented the SWC in the Cotton Bowl last season, finished with a 4-7 record. The Owls, completing their second season under Watson Brown, finished 3-8.
The Owls rallied in the final minute behind backup Kerry Overton, who completed a two-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Burgoyne with 42 seconds to play.
Overton’s pass for the two-point conversion failed.
Landry scored on a three-yard keeper in the first quarter and ran nine yards for another score in the second quarter.
Chip Browndyke kicked a school-record tying 51-yard field as the Cougars took a 17-7 halftime lead.
After the Owls pulled to within 17-14, Landry went one yard for his third touchdown with 12:09 left in the game.
