The Buffalo Bills announced Tuesday that they have waived Vince Ferragamo, their starter at quarterback for the first nine games this season.

The 31-year-old Ferragamo, an eight-year veteran from Nebraska, was obtained, along with an undisclosed draft choice, on July 18 from the Rams in exchange for tight end Tony Hunter.

He immediately became Buffalo’s starting quarterback, but the Bills won only one of the nine games with Ferragamo at the helm.

Ferragamo, who had completed 149 of 287 passes for 1677 yards for the Bills, threw only 5 touchdowns, was sacked 19 times and had 17 interceptions before being replaced by Bruce Mathison on Nov. 10.

Ferragamo, City Player of the Year at L.A. Banning High School in 1971, played at Cal before transferring to Nebraska.

Mathison, also out of Nebraska, got his first start against the Houston Oilers and has started ever since.

Team spokesman Dave Senko said Ferragamo’s spot on the roster will probably be taken by rookie quarterback Frank Reich, who has been on the injured reserve list since the start of the season.
