NBA Roundup : Knicks Give English Lesson and Surprise Nuggets, 111-94

Pat Cummings scored 19 points and Louis Orr limited Denver’s Alex English to 12 Tuesday night as the New York Knicks gave their fans at Madison Square Garden a rare victory with a 111-94 surprise over the Denver Nuggets.

English, the NBA’s leading scorer at 31.3 points per game, made only 4 of 16 shots from the field and 4 of 6 from the free-throw line.

Trent Tucker scored 18 points for the Knicks, Rory Sparrow added 16, and Ernie Grunfeld and Patrick Ewing had 12 apiece. Mike Evans scored 18 points for the Nuggets.

The Knicks surged to a 57-39 halftime lead and increased it to 90-64 at halftime.

Boston 112, Milwaukee 109--Larry Bird came alive with 10 points in the fourth-quarter at Milwaukee, and Kevin McHale scored 29 in all as the Celtics won their eighth straight game and snapped the Bucks’ home winning streak at 24.

Bird had eight points going into the final quarter, and the Celtics trailed by a point.

The Bucks made two crucial mistakes in the final minute. First they allowed the 24-second clock to expire without getting a shot with the Celtics leading, 109-108. Dennis Johnson scored a layup seconds later after McHale stole the ball near midcourt.

Paul Pressey scored 28 points for the Bucks, Terry Cummings added 25 and Sidney Moncrief had 22.

Houston 118, Phoenix 112--Akeem Olajuwon scored 18 points, including two key baskets in the final 1:52, and Lewis Lloyd added 25 points at Houston as the Rockets handed the Suns their 10th straight defeat on the road.

The Suns led, 112-107, but failed to score in the final 3:03 as the Rockets scored the last 11 points to stretch their home unbeaten streak to 11 straight games.

Larry Nance, who scored 39 points in a victory over the Rockets Saturday night at Phoenix, finished with 35 points--only five in the fourth quarter. Ralph Sampson added 21 points for the Rockets.

Washington 118, Portland 115--Jeff Malone scored 28 points, including a 17-foot jump shot with 14 seconds left, and the Bullets turned back the Trail Blazers at Landover, Md.

Kiki Vandeweghe had 30 points for Portland, but suffered a stress fracture in his right leg and is out indefinitely. Jeff Ruland added 28 for the Bullets.

Indiana 98, Cleveland 84--Herb Williams scored 20 points and Vern Fleming as the Pacers snapped a 23-game road losing streak by beating the Cavaliers at Richfield, Ohio.

The Pacers lost their final 14 road games last season and their first nine this season.

Philadelphia 127, Detroit 107--Moses Malone scored 29 points and Julius Erving added 18 as the 76ers scored their fourth straight road victory with a win over the Pistons at Pontiac, Mich.

Vinnie Johnson scored 22 points for Detroit and Tony Campbell added 20.

Dallas 107, Golden State 100--James Donaldson scored 20 points, including a three-point play with 25 seconds left and the Mavericks held off the Warriors at Oakland.

Mark Aguirre had 21 points for Dallas. Purvis Short led the Warriors with 25, including No. 10,000 of his career.

Seattle 123, San Antonio 103--Rookie Xavier McDaniel scored 23 points and the SuperSonics beat the Spurs at Seattle for their fifth victory in six games.

San Antonio’s Mike Mitchell scored 30 points, including the Spurs’ first 17.

Sacramento 131, Chicago 118--Rookie Joe Kleine had 18 points and 13 rebounds as the Kings dropped the Bulls at Sacramento.

Eddie Johnson had 29 points for the Kings, and Reggie Theus added 27. Orlando Woolridge scored 23 for the Bulls.
