The Community Health Education Project, initiated by the city to help parents and children deal with child sexual abuse, was officially completed this week.

Program coordinator Etty Garber, in a brief statement before the City Council, praised the city for taking steps to counteract the negative effects of alleged sexual abuse at the McMartin Pre-School and other local schools.

The project, which began as a one-year program on May 15, 1984, with a $66,000 grant and was later extended, was successful in educating teachers, parents and children on the issues of sexual abuse and developing a preventive program for youths, Garber said.
