Female Inmate Escapes While on Work Detail

A female inmate from the California Rehabilitation Center in Norco escaped Friday afternoon from a prison crew working along the Riverside Freeway near 14th Street in Riverside.

Rose Herrera, 32, is the first female inmate of the center to walk away from an outside work crew and the only woman to have escaped from custody in the last six or seven years, said Lt. George Morgan, information officer for the medium-security state prison.

Herrera was committed to the prison’s civil addict program last spring after being charged with grand theft in Fresno County, Morgan said. She was found to be abusing heroin, he said, but has no record of other serious crimes or violent behavior.

Her absence was noticed shortly before 3 p.m. Friday.

Herrera is 5-foot-1, weighs 110 pounds and has brown hair and eyes. She was wearing work boots, blue jeans, a light blue shirt and an orange vest.
